AMAs 2019: Halsey shades Grammys, other awards shows, praises fans

American Music Awards

Tonight’s 2019 AMAs contained a number of memorable performances — yet, it was Halsey’s speech that may go down as one of the night’s most memorable moments.

After winning an award during Sunday night’s telecast, the ‘Without Me” singer went up on stage and told a story about how, as a little girl, she would often dream about being up on stage and claiming some of these trophies. Yet, she also admitted that a lot of award shows aren’t what they are cracked up to be, and we understand that. There were frustrations among many fans over the recent Grammy nominations, and the reality is with industry awards that they can be so soul-crushing. It’s easy to get so caught up on the individual thoughts of a select group of voters, but those people don’t have to validate you. There are some other ways that you can go about finding support and love. Take, for example, fans.

In the end, the best moment of Halsey’s speech was thanking said fans. They were the reason why Halsey ended up winning this award, and this is why she likes the AMAs in the first place. It’s one of the largest fan-oriented music award shows out there. She won because of her supporters and there’s nothing that she loves more than giving back to them.

Will this be a speech that helps Halsey win trophies elsewhere? Probably not, but we think we’ve seen enough examples over the years of awards not dictating success. With the size of her fan base and the amount of love that she’s received over the past year, we think she’s got what matters the most. We just wonder if any other artists are going to hit the stage and say anything similar at some point in the future.
