Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight on HBO? The return
Let’s go ahead and get some of the bad news out of the way for now: There is no new episode of the show on the air tonight. Beyond that, there isn’t a new episode airing the remainder of the year. Last week was the final episode of 2019, and this is something that we’ve come to expect with Last Week Tonight over the years. It tends to run its seasons starting in February, and that means that you’re going to be waiting for a good while in order to see what the show does next.
For a number of shows out there, having a hiatus of a few months, give or take, isn’t so painful. It’s a little bit different for a show like this for a number of different reasons — starting, of course, with the way in which this news cycle tends to run. We basically have a new story every single day, so there’s inevitably going to be a lot of stuff that Oliver misses out on during his time away.
When John does come back in February, we imagine that the political climate may look at least somewhat different. Think in the following terms — we’re going to have a chance in order to see the primary season heat up and for us to learn a lot of things about the future direction of the election. We’re also sure in that time we’re going to hear stories about a number of different subjects, whether they be follow-ups or something that is wholly original.
In the end, waiting stinks — but we get it. We’re getting thirty episodes of one of the best shows on all TV and because of that, we really have little to complain about.
