Saturday Night Live: Will Ferrell plays Gordon Sondland in cold open

Saturday Night Live

It’s rare that we have a chance to see a Saturday Night Live host play a part in the cold open. Yet, that happened this time around as Will Ferrell stopped by in the role of Gordon Sondland.

Was this a big appearance? Hardly, but it was still a nice little cameo to cap off the end of the show’s opening featuring Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump. It’s noteworthy that we’ve seen a little bit less of Baldwin this season, but that seems to be something that was intentional from him the whole way through. He wanted to shake things up in terms of how much he is appearing and at this point, that seems to be successful, both for him and the show. A little less Baldwin goes a long way since it’s hard to bring that much new to the gig at this point.

As for Ferrell’s actual impression of Sondland, we’re not sure that it was all that effective … but mostly because we don’t recall all that much of his testimony. The truth is, anytime you bring Ferrell out as someone it’s going to be funny.

If the cold open wasn’t enough Will Ferrell for you, then his monologue brought out a special guest for Will to play around with — Ryan Reynolds. The entire premise here was that Will got starstruck and because of that, he couldn’t focus on anything else that was happening. Then, he freaked out when he heard that Blake Lively was watching at home. This was so much funnier than the cold open, mostly because this was something unique and different … something that we haven’t seen on SNL before.
