The writing was in some ways on the wall with this, but now it’s official — Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough are leaving America’s Got Talent. The two were only a part of one single season of the show last summer, and we’re not sure that either one of them meshed fully with the rest of the panel. (The news was first reported by Variety.)
In a lot of ways, we were surprised about the change in the first place to Union and Hough. Before the actress and former Dancing with the Stars judge came on the show, Heidi Klum and Mel B had served as judges on the series for years — and they each seemed to have a following. Sure, we understand the need to keep things fresh, but we do think that a little bit of stability is a good thing. The ratings were down for AGT this past summer, and you can wonder if this had to do with the casting changes or some other factor that is hard to figure out right now.
No matter the reason for the casting change, we’re curious to see what is happening now. We know that Klum is back for America’s Got Talent: The Champions alongside Britain’s Got Talent judge and singer Alesha Dixon. We wonder if this could end up being the panel for the next season of the regular show, but it’s a little early to know for sure. We will say this, though — Alesha’s a great judge and she brings the right combination of empathy and humor to the proceedings. Heck, we wouldn’t mind if they brought over David Walliams from the British version of the show, as well.
New episodes of America’s Got Talent proper will air on NBC this coming summer — meanwhile, America’s Got Talent: The Champions will be premiering in January. There’s a lot of interesting stuff coming for the future of the franchise.
