Hawaii Five-0 season 10: Is McGarrett’s mom Doris dead?

Hawaii Five-0

We heard entering tonight’s Hawaii Five-0 episode that it was going to be a very emotional one for Steve McGarrett. Yet, we never quite knew that it would be THIS emotional. From the get-go, we recognized that Christine Lahti’s character of Doris — and McGarrett’s mother — would die. Yet, we also never recognized that it would actually happen over the course of the hour.

Yet, this is what happened in the closing minutes of the hour. Doris found herself dead, and now, Steve is going to find himself reeling. Suffice it to say, this is a heartbreaking moment for a man who seems to lose a great deal of everything he loves. Doris was far from the perfect mother, but it was beyond painful to hear Steve refer to her as “ma” within the closing minutes of the hour.

What is this moment going to do to Steve? We imagine that a part of him will always be gone, and the other part of it will be about him doing whatever he can in order to hold those he loves close. You have to take value in a lot of the little things and work to take advantage of almost every little opportunity that you possibly can.

Alex O’Loughlin was phenomenal for this whole episode and we have to say that, in general, he crafted one heck of a send-off story for Doris. It was painful, meaningful, and he took the job of both writer and director seriously. To many, we wonder if this many be considered one of the best episodes in quite some time. For Steve now, his journey becomes mostly about working to find closure. This probably isn’t something that will come about immediately. It’s also going to be hard for him to stop in and mourn when he’s got so many other matters to attend to at all time.
