BH90210 canceled by Fox; no season 2 on the way for ‘revival’

BH90210

Unfortunately, it looks as though the much-hyped “revival” of BH90210 is going to be one that is rather short-lived.

Today, Fox confirmed that they are not bringing back the summer “event series” for another batch of episodes. There was never any confirmation that they would, but after it got off to such a strong ratings start months ago, speculation started to intensify. Meanwhile, there were some in the cast who expressed an interest in coming back for more.

In a statement, here is some of what the network had to say about making this choice:

“We are so proud to have reunited in a very special summer event one of the network’s legacy series and casts with 90210 fans across the country … Profound thanks to and respect for Brian [Austin Green], Gabrielle [Carteris], Ian [Ziering], Jason [Priestley], Jennie [Garth], Shannen [Doherty] and Tori [Spelling], who, along with the entire crew and everyone at FOX and CBS Television Studios, poured their hearts and souls into this truly inventive and nostalgic revival.”

It was this “inventive” aspect that, ironically, may have kept BH90210 from coming back for more episodes. The series revolved around the cast members playing modified versions of themselves as they worked in order to put together a different version of the show. We think that, even in spite of a marketing push trying to make it clear what the show was, there were some viewers out there who thought that we were going to see something that felt rather similar to the vintage Beverly Hills, 90210 that we ended up seeing so many years ago. This was not the same, and viewers bailed on the show fairly fast over what was just a short summer run. While there were still some viewers who enjoyed the whole thing, this was another reminder that sometimes, there is no real long-term success for a nostalgia play. You put something on the air, viewers enjoy it temporarily, and then eventually, they realize that there’s nothing more that they can draw from the metaphorical well.

The fate of BH90210 as a series has been now added to our official CarterMatt Renewal/Cancellation Guide.
