NCIS star Wilmer Valderrama to executive-produce The Trail at CBS

Beyond NCIS, Wilmer Valderrama is looking to extend his brand at CBS — and no, it doesn’t mean that he’s leaving the show so let’s just nip that in the bud right away.

According to a new report coming in via Deadline, the network behind the long-running crime drama has picked up The Trail, a project written by David Harrington Miller. The logline notes that the show “revolves around an elite unit of investigators within the U.S. National Park Service who work to solve the highest-profile cases in Yosemite National Park, a location known for its rare beauty and extraordinary danger.” the similarities between the show and NCIS are clear, though it definitely feels like this is the sort of show that needs to film in a very specific location in order to make sure that it works.

Wilmer is executive-producing through his WV Entertainment banner; he’s under an overall deal with CBS that includes his contract to keep playing Nick Torres on NCIS. Another notable name from NCIS in David North is also set to be an executive producer.

Over the past few years, CBS has shown an affinity for utilizing its talent and developing other projects with them, as well. Mark Harmon, for example, is an executive producer on NCIS: New Orleans. Meanwhile, they have previously picked up a show from Johnny Galecki and Michael Weatherly is an executive producer behind the scenes on Bull. A number of other actors have also developed projects at the network, and some of them are still in active development.

While Valderrama will need to put some time into his producing gigs, he should be able to balance both this and NCIS for however long that he wants — as referenced earlier. Wilmer’s been a part of the show for the past several years, and has established himself now as a significant part of the team.
