Lucifer season 5 will air in halves, Tom Ellis confirms

Earlier this year, we made a case that Lucifer season 5 should have 16 episodes, and that they could be split up into two different halves. Sure, we’d rather have a season 6 and 7 to top it off, but we’re always going to be happy to have more of the show in general. (Remember that at first, season 5 was only going to have ten installments.)

Today, Tom Ellis confirmed during a set visit that aired on The Kelly Clarkson Show that the fifth season will, in fact, be split into two separate batches of eight. As first reported by Entertainment Weekly, here is some of what the leading man had to say:

“Season 5 of Lucifer is going to be split into two halves … Netflix is going to drop eight episodes, and then there’s going to be a little break, and then they’re going to drop another eight episodes.”

Our thinking is that we could see the first eight episodes at some point in the spring, and then maybe the second eight in the summer or the fall. We think that the big reason for Netflix to do this is simple: They want to make money! That’s a derivative point but still, a true point. Netflix, this way, gets two months of a subscription out of people as opposed to the one that they would potentially be snagging from them otherwise.

Also, we suppose that Netflix wants to preserve having new episodes of Lucifer on the air as long as possible to ensure that a lot of viewers have a chance to check the show out — and maybe some of their other programming at the same time. The one advantage viewers get in the split-season format is that maybe they’re going to get the first eight episodes than they would otherwise if they had to wait for them.
