For the time being, let’s kick things off by noting this — there is no 100% assurance as to whether or not The Kominsky Method is coming back. We know that we’d like to see more, but it’s going to come down to a multitude of different factors.
Performance – While it’s true that season 1 generated a lot of awards-show buzz, that is just one of the factors they look at when considering a renewal. If they don’t feel like the series itself is financially viable, eventually they will decide to move in a different direction. That’s just their way more often than not. If The Kominsky Method does dominate in terms of Golden Globe nominations, though, we will say this — it’s going to be a little bit harder for Netflix to send it out to pasture.
Douglas and Arkin’s interest – Both of these actors are very much in the strata of “we don’t have to do anything unless we really want to.” If they feel like there’s a reason to do more, we have to imagine that they’ll come back for more. Unlike some of the typical shows that are out there, though, we do think that there’s more flexibility here based on what the actors want.
Is there more story to tell? – This always is going to matter here, as well, given that executive producer Chuck Lorre doesn’t have to do anything unless he absolutely wants to. He’s got some other shows out there including Mom and then also Bob Hearts Abishola.
Like most other Netflix comedies, we’re sure that the streaming service will analyze things over the next few months before making some sort of firm decision, one way or another. We’re hoping that it will lead to another season being greenlit, but for now, we’re filing it away in the “too early to be sure” category.
