How long could Meredith stay in prison on Grey’s Anatomy season 16? As we move forward through the rest of the season, this has to be one of the greatest questions.

At the end of tonight’s episode, Meredith found out the bad news that she’s going to be heading off to prison — at least for some stretch of time. The biggest reason for this is that she’s missed both community service and her court date — even if the absences were for good reason.

What this Grey’s Anatomy episode was ultimately a reminder of this simple fact: How complicated right and wrong can be. Meredith got in trouble in the first place because she helped someone, and she missed her community service to try and help the hospital. Tonight, she missed court in order to help Zola. She’s done so many things that are benevolent in nature, but there are still consequences. You can’t ignore what are laws without having to face the end result of it.

If we had to project now as to what the future is going to hold, we’d say this: We’re of the belief that we’re going to be seeing Meredith only spend a short period of time behind bars. We don’t think that the writers are out to punish her forever — think of this more as an opportunity to see the character learn a few new things about herself. While we wouldn’t say that this storyline will be fun, it should at least be different and stand out from many others that we’ve had a chance to see.

For now, we at least know this: Meredith is going to be running the risk of missing out on Halloween time with her kids because of her time behind bars.
