Fox has confirmed that they have picked up the animated comedy series Bless the Harts, which has an impressive voice cast led by Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and more for another batch of episodes. This comes fairly early on in the show’s run, but in a lot of ways, it needed to. Animated comedies are the sort that require a lot of lead-up time and that means the creative team needs to get ready far in advance.
As for the ratings for Bless the Harts season 1, they have been all over the map. A big part of the reason why is because of the impact of the NFL as a lead-in. When Fox’s animated lineup gets that sort of boost, they all perform so much better than when there is no football beforehand. That will be the way that things go for the majority of this season.
What we see this early renewal as mostly is a reminder that Fox wants this comedy to be a big-time hit down the road and for now, they are taking a big gamble on the cast. You could also make the argument here that they are desperately seeking a new animated comedy to through into their lineup. If you look across the board right now, there are a lot of longtime stalwarts. Bob’s Burgers is really the newest show in their dominant trio of The Simpsons, it, and Family Guy, and they want to be able to find some new blood. Perhaps the only way in which to make that happen is to give a show a long enough chance. One of the real issues, at least in our mind, with modern TV is that there are a lot of people afraid to take big-time chances on shows. Why? They are afraid that in doing so, they’ll ultimately be canceled quick and they’ll be afraid they wasted their time. Viewers like to know that there will be a story return on their investment.
