This Is Us season 4 episode 5 promo: The Kevin – Sophie surprise
At the end of Tuesday night’s new episode, a younger version of the character made a shocking phone call to his mother Rebecca that he had gotten married to Sophie. He was just starting his career as an actor, he was separate from his family, and he was seemingly looking for something to cling to. In his mind, being able to tie the knot to a woman he loved was the right way to heal himself a little.
Herein lies the problem with doing this: They were both extremely young, and the wedding itself seemed to be extremely impulsive. There was no lead-up or warning that something like this was going to be coming, so Rebecca and everyone else now has to sift through the aftermath and try and determine how they feel about it. More than likely, they’re going to have some opinions — big opinions. If you’re Kevin, this is going to be one of the harder situations for you to justify, and it goes just beyond you loving someone and looking for a way to profess it. You could’ve at least talked about it in advance!

As for whether or not this episode signals that Sophie still has a role to play in the present, there’s nothing certain about that just yet — there is also no guarantee that Sophie is going to prove herself to be the right person for him in 2019. Cassidy feels like the obvious love interest for the Kevin character at this point, but as fascinating as their relationship may be, she still is indicating that she wants back with her husband. Kevin’s trying his best in order to support that and not add any chaos to her life. He’s firmly in this “I want to help people” phase, even buying an RV that he’s putting next to Nicky’s. He’s made it a huge goal of his to try and help get his uncle’s life on track, even though Nicky hasn’t shown much of an interest in wanting to change.
