Succession season 2 finale: Is this Kendall Roy’s breakthrough?
The idea of Kendall Roy being thrown under the bus was an easy thing to call — it feels like he’s always the bottom part of Logan’s food chain, and he’s constantly belittled and led to feel less than. That’s why it was interesting to see what he did after being thrown under the bus.
In a lot of ways, we had an expectation that we were going to end up seeing Kendall just go off into a corner and cry. Humiliation has been such a big part of his central narrative — just think about the bed. Having him go off in the fetal position for the rest of the hiatus would’ve been appropriate.
Yet, Kendall decided to take a different approach in the closing minutes, echoing in some ways the premiere — while also throwing Logan under the bus himself. In so many ways, he exposed the man for who he really was — at least for those who were somewhat unaware of it already. (You gotta make some assumptions about him within the business world, right?)
We do think that Kendall may have done some damage to Logan … but do we like him more for it? Can you really like most of the main characters on this show? While Kendall does put himself in an interesting, slightly-more-empowered place (at least personally) entering season 3, who knows how long it will last? This was at least a chance to set up a new paradigm. Instead of focusing solely on who could take over the Logan Roy business empire, maybe we can look at this family a little bit different. We hardly think that Kendall’s time on the show is over; as a matter of fact, it may be more interesting than ever. The days of him as just a punching bag may be nearing an end.
