NCIS season 17 episode 3 review: Gibbs, Sloane, & an elephant painting
Through most of the episode tonight, we saw Sloane take it upon herself to get to the bottom of a number of unresolved issues that the team had regarding her showing up. What we learned is that Bishop, McGee, and Torres all were taking on a few different issues somewhere within their head, but rather than tackle them directly, they’re all more content to sweep some of them under the rug. Deflection is the name of the game.

Yet, in the process of Sloane focusing on the problems of others, it felt clear throughout this season that she was also actively working in order to shun some issues of her own. In particular, she seemed to be wrestling with unresolved feelings for Gibbs that she didn’t want to talk about, no matter the circumstance. There were moments where it felt like there were things she wanted to say to him, but she couldn’t find a way to get through and articulate some of these. It also didn’t help that Gibbs very much remains a rock when it comes to sharing some of his feelings.
Sloane and Gibbs did, briefly, have a conversation about Ziva, including that Gibbs is struggling when it comes to finding a way to deal with the fact that she’s gone all over again. She encouraged Gibbs to try and let things go, but we know that this is not something that he is always altogether good at. It was clear during this episode that there were definitely some feelings that Sloane has for Gibbs, but it’s all about finding the right time and saying the right thing.
As for the case itself…
We saw what began as a case of a garden-gnome murder turn into something so much more — a case about corruption and chaos on a mobile-home park. This all began with a pair of businessmen who doubled the rent in order to force some tenants out. These two wanted to screw over a number of people in order to ensure that they could make a big profit … at least until one of the two of them developed a moral compass. When one of them died after an argument, the other did everything possible to cover things up.
At the end of the case, Gibbs and the team were able to resolve the case and help the screwed-over tenants … consider that the win to make everyone satisfied for now.
CarterMatt Verdict
So what did we take away from the end of the episode? As it turns out, McGee, Bishop, and Torres are still dealing with stuff after Ziva’s arrival. Meanwhile, Sloane is nursing some feelings for Gibbs, but it may take some time for her to really come clean about it. Yet, there was that elephant painting that Gibbs bought at the end of the episode … one that was left as a gift for Sloane in the end. Doesn’t that mean something?
