So how is what we learned within this episode tonight going to factor into all of this? We know that there could be more power to the Jack flash-forwards, but it may not be something that we get clarity on for some point in the future? We we do have a good sense of through that, though, is that the show isn’t just holding forward through a few specific timelines — or just one point in the future. There’s a sense of fluidity here and a freedom in what the show can do.

Moving forward, the priority for This Is Us is to find a way to surprise — and that is, perhaps, why time is its greatest overall medium. It allows itself the ability to be able to tell new and interesting stories, ones that contain elements or breadcrumbs of things that you would not otherwise anticipate. When it comes to characters and their motivations, these are the things that do need to be a little more consistent in the end.
