NCIS season 17 premiere: Ziva’s pills; why the character has anxiety
One of the things that we were told fairly early on within the episode tonight was that when you’re away from society as long as Ziva was, it changes you — pretty dramatically, in fact. It causes you to look and feel different, and we saw in the episode Cote de Pablo’s character having concerning flashbacks to her past while also holding onto some sort of medication.

Over the past few years, it’s possible that Ziva contracted something, just as it is also possible that she’s become addicted to something as a way to mask her pain. Addiction was a big part of the season 16 finale, and this could be a way for the writers to thematically tie it together.
As the episode progressed, we started to learn a few more things when it comes to what was going on with her. Ziva and Gibbs had a conversation aboard a bus and, at that point, the two had a conversation about said pills. She admitted that she is suffering from anxiety and with that, the “mystery” is a mystery no longer.
What is so powerful about this reveal is that it is a large reminder that no matter who you are or where you come from, you can still suffer from the same problems as anyone else. It gave us vulnerability to this character and it makes complete sense — absolutely someone in Ziva’s position would be dealing with a lot of hardship and stress. she’s been away from her family for years on end — and by that, we mean both her greater NCIS family and then also her relationship with Tony and her daughter.
