Emmys 2019 ratings fall hard — what’s the reason why?

EmmysThe 2019 Emmys continued what has to be a worrying trend for the once-great award show — people just aren’t that interested in watching.

Per early numbers, last night’s big telecast on fox ended up generating just a 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and then also a little over 6 million viewers. This performance could fluctuate somewhat when the final figures are released, but for now this is a big drop from the 2018 telecast. In general, the past few years have showcased one big fall in the numbers after the next, leading to questions aplenty as to precisely what is going on here?

If we were to wager a guess, it would go a little something like the following.

The lack of a host – We know that doing a hostless broadcast was a move made following the Oscars, who had big success opting to go against having a master of ceremonies. Yet, success doesn’t often repeat itself. The Oscars were capitalizing on a lot of curiosity and publicity for it, and none of that was present for the Emmys this time around.

The lack of notable, mainstream newcomers – While Fleabag may be a great show, it is not necessarily one watched by all of mainstream America. There were few mainstream comedies to get a ton of love and, beyond that, the appetite for Game of Thrones winning for a polarizing final season wasn’t there. Sure, Emmy viewers couldn’t have predicted the winners, but it was easy to anticipate that dragons would seize the day there regardless of how many people disliked the final season.

There’s just SO much TV – Because of how crowded the landscape now is, the Emmys itself has become a more complicated program to produce and put on. There are just so many shows that people watch that aren’t nominated — also, there are so many options that watching a TV awards show isn’t that exciting anymore.

Can the Emmys turn things around in 2020? Well, for starters, there will be no more Game of Thrones which could open the door to other shows that haven’t had a chance to get recognized and have long been snubbed — meanwhile, there will probably be a host. There’s at least somewhat of a chance for the awards show to really celebrate itself in a way that it really hasn’t this year.
