Is Austin Amelio leaving Fear the Walking Dead, and the role of Dwight? We’ve already seen him say goodbye to this character once before. After departing The Walking Dead previously, is it possible that we could witness something similar here? Tonight’s episode makes you raise some questions in regards to the character’s future.
Near the conclusion of Sunday night’s new episode, we saw Dwight make a rather-hasty decision to depart the Convoy with Morgan, Alicia, and others. Why? It has to do with his perspective on Virginia, and his lack of interest in working with her. The moment that he learned that Morgan wanted to call her and ask her group for help, that was enough for him to want to leave. He doesn’t want to go in that direction, and a lot of that may have to do with his ability to be self-sufficient in this world.

For much of Fear the Walking Dead season 5, we’ve seen one of the principal goals being trying to find a new home for some of these characters. There is a hope that at some point, you can actually find a better place to rest your head — that’s what drove some of these characters to the Gulch in the first place before recognizing that the place was overrun with zombies.
Does Dwight want that home for himself? Absolutely, but there are lines that he doesn’t want to cross. Remember that he’s already experienced life under a regime in working under Negan at Sanctuary. Maybe Virginia doesn’t present herself the same way, but this is concern that he may still have. That’s why he decides to wander off before he joins in on the overall experience of sending out the welcome wagon.
As for whether or not we’ll see Dwight again, we’re not in the business of ruling it out! It’s hard to, since he’s still in close proximity. Also, we’ve already lost this character once — no need to do so all over again.
