Riverdale season 4 premiere spoilers: Luke Perry tribute details

Luke Perry

The Riverdale season 4 premiere on October 9 may be one of the most emotional episodes of the entire series. It may even be one of the most emotional ones on all TV this year. “In Memoriam” is the tribute episode to Luke Perry and, through the lens of the show, the character of Fred Andrews. All signs point to the character being killed in the first episode, and rather than deal with cliffhangers or a number of long-term story arcs, most of the premiere is just going to revolve around saying goodbye.

This week, The CW revealed the Riverdale season 4 premiere synopsis with some other information all about what’s coming:

A FAREWELL TO FRED ANDREWS – As the residence of Riverdale prepare for its upcoming Independence Day parade, Archie (KJ Apa) receives a phone call that will change the rest of his life forever. Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Cole Sprouse, Madelaine Petsch, Marisol Nichols, Madchen Amick, Mark Consuelos, Skeet Ulrich, Casey Cott, Charles Melton and Vanessa Morgan also star. Gabriel Correa directed the episode written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (#401.) Original airdate 10/9/2019.

As previously reported, Riverdale isn’t staging an episode that requires an extreme amount of investment into season 3 in order to understand. Instead, the goal here is to just tell a story that will be powerful, and one that can offer Archie somewhat of a chance for closure and peace. The phone call suggests that he will be told of his father’s passing after the fact, and then, he will have a chance to lean on his friends and family after the fact.

Shannen Doherty, who co-starred with Perry on the original Beverly Hills, 90210, is also going to be appearing in this episode in a role that features perfect for what the show is trying to do. There are no real specifics out there about it yet, but that could change as we near this episode.

Perry died earlier this year following complications from a stroke. Rather than addressing it on last season of Riverdale, the writers decided that it would be best to take their time and give him a proper, powerful farewell.
