Grey’s Anatomy season 16 poster puts Ellen Pompeo at the center
Do we understand why there are people out there who would love to see other characters in some of the promo art? Sure, but Meredith is the engine for Grey’s Anatomy — to mix metaphors a little bit with Station 19. She’s been a main focus from the start — heck, her name is not only in the title of the show, but also in the hospital at the center of it! (Sure, we know that it’s a reference more to Lexi … but still.)
Entering season 16, it’s also abundantly clear that Meredith is in one of the most curious spots out of anyone within the greater Grey’s Anatomy world. Just think about it in this way for the moment. She’s facing legal jeopardy following the insurance-fraud scandal, she doesn’t have a job at the moment, and she has to ensure that her new boyfriend DeLuca doesn’t take the fall for her. She has a lot that she will have to attend to within the first few episodes, and there is no guarantee that any of these crises are going to be resolved immediately. As a matter of fact, it’s probably better if they aren’t. You want to think that some of the central twists matter a little bit.

Let’s get back further into the full promo art below, since there are a couple of things that are interesting about it. Take, for example, the new tagline of “where do we go from here?” — a clear, very deliberate nod to the situation that Meredith is in at the moment. Meanwhile, the blurry nature of the background could be a reference to the uncertain situation that Meredith now faces in terms of her life. What does she want? We know that her kids are a part of it and so is her new relationship, but there’s also so much more there. There’s a lot to be explored, and we’ll start to get answers on ABC next week.
