The unfortunate news is that, at least at the moment, there is no word as to whether or not the dance competition will be back for another season. We know that we’d like to see more of it coming up, but nothing is altogether confirmed at present.

The bad news for the dance competition is that the ratings for the series are far from great. To date, season 16 has averaged a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic — that is down a good 20% from the 15th season of the show. Yet, the ratings for So You Think You Can Dance haven’t been great in a really long time. It has long been a bubble series on Fox but, time and time again, it finds a way to come back. What’s the biggest reason for that? We think that a lot of that has to do with the simple fact that it’s art. This is a show that generates Emmy nominations, critical acclaim, and has a dedicated fan following. While it does cost some money to put on, we don’t imagine that this is one of the more expensive productions in all of reality television.

As for when you can expect a renewal, one way or another, we would say that you’re going to be waiting for a while. Fox has never been altogether quick to renew the series, even if would’ve been great to get some more news on its future sooner rather than later. We’re, for the time being, cautiously optimistic … but we also recognize that eventually, we are going to get to that point where there just isn’t all that much in the way of wiggle room for this series anymore. It’s going to find itself over, but if it does ever end, we’d like it to get a proper final season to ensure that its overall legacy be celebrated as it should.
