Mayans MC season 2: Kurt Sutter will step down as co-showrunner after finale

Mayans MC

While Kurt Sutter is currently in charge of the day-to-day storytelling on Mayans MC season 2, it’s not going to be that way forever. Provided that the FX series gets a season 3, he is prepared to relinquish his showrunner duties and hand the baton over to Elgin James. The two have been working on the series together as co-showrunners, but it has always been the plan for Kurt, who ran the original Sons of Anarchy, to allow James to guide the story. His real-life experiences, coupled with his talents, make him the perfect person to tell some of these stories.

During a recent season 2 premiere event, Sutter (per Deadline) had the following to say about his exit — but also his interest in staying involved behind the scenes:

I stood up here last year and shared my intentions about what I wanted for Mayans MC. That it was my job to honor the narrative legacy of SOA and guide the transition into the new mythology of the Mayans.

And with the help of an amazing cast and crew, I feel like I’ve been able to do that…By the end of this season, narrative arcs that we set up in Charming will find their conclusion in Santo Padre. And EZ Reyes will find himself inside a new, unexpected truth. His feet firmly planted. Albeit, standing in a huge puddle of f—-ng blood.

So as promised, it’s time for the white guy to leave the building. If we are lucky enough to have a season 3, I will be stepping back as day to day showrunner and handing the reins to my talented and passionate partner, Elgin James.

Let’s reiterate here that Sutter went on to confirm that he will continue to be involved in the show’s production and the overall world, but in a different form than what he’s doing right now. We are excited for the future of this series, and in stepping away from his co-showrunner title, that may also allow Sutter to look at some other projects.

As for Mayans MC season 2, we’ll see precisely what happens when it premieres this coming Tuesday on FX.
