Yellowstone season 3: Could Kevin Costner eventually direct?

We know Kevin Costner to be a prolific actor, but at the same time, think back to his career as a director. We’re talking about the man responsible for Dances with Wolves! While directing isn’t necessarily something that he’s done with great regularity throughout all of his career, he’s still got a resume and a skill set for it.

With that in mind, we have to assume that Kevin directing an episode of Yellowstone is a subject that has come up with some regularity behind the scenes. It would bring a sense of added publicity to the show, and get people talking about it in a way that they don’t already. We say this knowing full well that Yellowstone is already one of the highest-rated cable shows on summer TV. Just in live ratings alone, it was up versus their numbers from season 1!

Speaking in a new piece over at DeadlineYellowstone executive producer Taylor Sheridan notes that he would be more than happy to see Costner take on the directing responsibilities for a given episode — but the ball is ultimately in his court there:

He’s always welcome to have it. I don’t know that…it’s a hard hat to wear, given the pace of television and where it really gets difficult is we lean on Kevin so hard in keeping him in front of the camera. I think it would be asking a lot of him especially in the post schedule, to do both. But he’s welcome to and nothing would make me happier.

Remember that in addition to Costner being a star on the series, he is also an executive producer. That does add more responsibility to his plate in the first place. He’s got a lot to take on with this show week in and week out, given that he’s in a huge chunk of the scenes. The best thing that you have to hope for here is that there is an opportunity to feature Kevin as a director for an episode where he doesn’t have as much to do as an actor … if that ever happens.
