The Affair season 5 episode 2 promo: Cole’s home and the future
As per usual, there are a number of different things going on with a multitude of the show’s characters. Take, for example, Helen doing her best to work through her grief after losing Vik. It’s not going to be easy for her, even with having the knowledge that he was dying. It’s not so simple as being able to blink and life is better. She may be looking for an escape, which could bring her down the road to movie star Sasha Mann. (Ironically, in the promo Noah seems to be more afraid of Sasha having an interest in his engaged daughter.)

Noah has some relationship problems on his own — most notably, trying to find a way to incorporate Janelle into the rest of his life. One of the things that Noah doesn’t seem to understand are issues related to race and perception. He didn’t do anything when Janelle was treated like wait staff in the premiere, and now she’s finding out that Noah’s being looked at as “cooler” in the eyes of his family just because he is dating a black woman. There are clearly discussions that need to be had.
Finally, this episode is going to be the one that sends Joanie off to Montauk, where she will have a challenge of looking into environmental and climate-change issues relative to the community. Also, it’s a chance to visit the home of her father — though the status of Cole within this world remains a mystery. Judging from what Joanie said in the premiere, he is either dead or gone from her life altogether.
