Brandon Routh, Courtney Ford leaving Legends of Tomorrow after season 5

Legends of Tomorrow

As we prepare for Legends of Tomorrow season 5, let’s dive into some news that does make us very sad — Brandon Routh and Courtney Ford are leaving. When is that happening? Think following the end of the upcoming season.

To call this news shock feels somewhat like an understatement. We’re talking about two characters who are very popular, with Routh in particular being one of the few remaining original cast members on the show. He’s the sort of performer who conceivably, could have continued to grace the world of the Legends for quite some time as Ray Palmer — the optimistic heart of the Waverider. We would’ve been rather happy if he did! Suffice it to say, we’re very much sad to see him go. The same goes for Ford as Nora, who had a wonderful redemption arc.

In a statement (per Deadline), executive producers Phil Klemmer, Grianne Godfree and Keto Shimizu had the following to say about the decision today:

“Brandon and Courtney have been invaluable members of the Legends family … They have always brought a level passion and collaboration to their characters and to the show — both on and off the screen – that we deeply admire and for which we are eternally grateful.”

Routh himself has already made it clear that it was not his decision to depart the series, and he’s also retweeted messages from some who are critical of the move. Clearly, there was something that transpired creatively here that has him sad and disappointed, much like so many of us. What made Ray Palmer a hero was that he was so very much different within the world of Legends of Tomorrow. We’re talking about a guy with a huge heart, someone who fought hard for others and advocated for science and knowledge. He was one of the best superhero role models out there and we get the sense that the guy in real life was very much the same. We’re talking about someone who knew, as a former Superman, what went with playing the character as far as responsibility goes.

Legends of Tomorrow season 5 premieres in 2020.
