When Ballers season 5 premieres on HBO over the weekend, it’s going to be doing more than airing yet another season. It’s going to be airing the final season on the network. This is going to be a big, dramatic batch of episodes where there will be a lot of fireworks, presumably a lot of drama, and hopefully a legacy cemented for Spencer Strasmore.
If you look below, Dwayne Johnson discusses the end of the show and expresses gratitude to the network, the viewers, and everyone involved in the production. He’s had one of HBO’s biggest comedy hits of the decade, and he’s also allowed a lot of viewers out there to see a side of pro athletes and their lifestyles than any that they’d ever seen before.
So what went into the decision to end the show? According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s one that was made with the show’s creative in mind. The story for this season was crafted in advance to be the end — there’s no story getting cut off at the last second here.
For Johnson, it’s clear that he’s going to be plenty busy without Ballers on his schedule. In a lot of ways, it was a surprise that HBO even got him for a TV series in the first place. We’re talking about one of the most bankable entertainers in the country. He’s going to continue to have movies and other projects in the works, and there is definitely a chance that we do still see Johnson continue his work with the network further at some point down the road.

My heart 🖤 is full of gratitude to all of you for rockin’ with us every season. You made us HBO’s highest rated comedy for years and most importantly, you helped create and sustain a platform for other actors to have the OPPORTUNITY to work hard, grow and become household names. To me, the opportunity Ballers created for so many others, is the real gold of our show. I love you, I thank you and enjoy our final season of BALLERS. This SUNDAY on @HBO. @SevenBucksProd
