Bachelor in Paradise season 6: Demi Burnett on Kristian romance, criticism

Bachelor in Paradise season 5 premiere date

This week’s new episode of Bachelor in Paradise turned out to be a big one for Bachelor Nation in wide array of ways. Namely, it featured the first same-sex romance in the history of the US version of the franchise. Demi Burnett and Kristian Haggerty decided to showcase their relationship on television for the first time, as she ended up splitting off from Derek Peth for a romance she had before the show.

Yet, the groundbreaking romance has come with its fair share of criticism — there are some who are going to be prejudiced against the nature of the relationship itself, but then there are others who have felt like the whole thing was planned out, or that Kristian doesn’t deserve to be there since she was not a part of Bachelor Nation before. Speaking in a new interview with Good Morning America, Demi recognizes that there is flack out there, but that’s not causing her to change anything about what happened or the decisions that she’s made:

“This was a super-tough time for me that being criticized does hurt … But I know there’s nothing I can do to change how people are perceiving it or how they feel about it.”

Our feelings on Demi continuing to be there are the same as they’ve been — we understand how some show purists may be upset about Kristian being there, but is it really that different than someone like Jane being there earlier this season? Nobody seemed to remember her going into the season. Meanwhile, it’s a compelling story that’s different than anything else Bachelor in Paradise has going on. There are no real rules; if it wasn’t a compelling story, maybe Demi would be sent home. That’s just not the case.

Also, if Derek is okay with it and he’s the one who got heartbroken, maybe we should all be okay with it in the end? That’s just something else to think about here.
