Yellowstone season 2 finale spoilers: Meet John Dutton’s father
According to a report from Deadline, legendary character actor Dabney Coleman will be appearing in the role of John Dutton Sr. The character will appear in flashbacks, and the more you know about the finale, the more appropriate this is going to seem. The title for it is “Sins of the Father,” and that suggests that much of the episode is going to be about four generations of Dutton and how this story builds and develops over time. Think in this sense — we’re going to be seeing how John Dutton Sr. treated his son, how John Jr. (Kevin Costner) treated Beth, Jamie and Kayce, and then now what’s going on with Kayce’s son Tate — who was kidnapped at the end of this past episode. You can also go ahead and add to this the fact that Jamie could be a father in his own right soon and that could alter the course of the series a little bit further.
There’s no word as of yet on if Coleman could return in season 3 to reprise this role further, but we have to imagine that it’s possible. One of the great things that could come out of season 3 is getting to learn more about why John became the man that he has — there’s no questioning that he is an excellent rancher and businessman, but finding success in these two fields has also come with a heavy toll. That is something that he is continuing to have to deal with in his own way moving forward.
Yellowstone already has a season 3 renewal — because of that, you can at least feel good about the long-term future going into the final episode of this season next week. (In a rare feat, season 2 is actually performing better both in the demo and total viewers than season 1.)
