Succession renewed by HBO for season 3!

Succession season 2

It did not take long at all for HBO to realize that they wanted a Succession season 3 — they’ve given it the green light already just a few episodes in to season 2!

Today, the network officially decided to bring the series back for another go around — a move that is likely based on the ratings success that it’s had through the past two weeks. Just in terms of live ratings alone, these two episodes are averaging more than 600,000 viewers. That’s a small increase from where the series was last year, and that’s without factoring in all of the repeat viewings/streams that the show has received to date. Succession is one of those series that still has a chance to improve its performance exponentially as well — it’s got a biting wit, addictive storytelling, and also a great cast full of people you’re going to want to see and hear more of over the course of the coming weeks.

In a statement confirming the renewal, HBO Drama Programming executive vice president Francesca Orci had the following to say:

“We are elated that Succession and its exploration of wealth, power and family has resonated so powerfully with audiences … We cannot wait to see how the complex characters that Jesse Armstrong has created continue to navigate this captivating, ruthless world of the uber-rich.”

With Succession coming back, HBO is doing its part to try and cement what they want their future of their network to be which is important during a time of great transition. With Game of Thrones over, Big Little Lies potentially done, and True Detective MIA for the time being, they have to turn their attention elsewhere. Watchmen is premiering this fall, Westworld will be back for more, and we know that they are putting a lot of stock in their new Joss Whedon series The Nevers. There is also still a Game of Thrones prequel in development, though it remains to be seen when that will premiere and if it will carry over even a fraction of the audience of the original after its polarizing end.

Succession is never going to be the next Game of Thrones — yet, it could at least have a stable audience that keeps it around for some time.
