American Horror Story: 1984: What to take away from promos
What’s the message of this promo? That there are terrible people in the woods ready to kill you … which does sound like the same message that you could get from any horror production out there. What we think you’re left to wonder more is this — how much are these promos going to matter when the dust settles?
If you didn’t know already, many promos that FX puts out for American Horror Story seasons have little to do plot-wise with what’s actually going to happen. The purpose here is to more tease what some of the general themes are going to of a given season. They want you to be thinking about this sort of stuff so that when the new season premieres, you know some of what you can expect. Here, it’s clear that they want you thinking about nostalgia, about classic slasher films, and about a summer-camp sort of setting. Some of this may play into the nostalgia at the heart of this season … but there could be another strategy at play here.
What could that strategy be? We wouldn’t be shocked if a lot of these classic-slasher teases were meant to be a form of misdirection. It’s possible that executive producer Ryan Murphy and the rest of the team want you to be entering this season thinking that you’re going to have a classic summer-camp crisis story, only for them to unveil a big twist midway through the season. It wouldn’t be the first time they’ve done this — think about American Horror Story: Roanoke.
