Is City on a Hill renewed, canceled at Showtime? Premiere date hopes
We don’t need to waste a whole lot of time before going ahead and presenting this bit of good news: There will be a City on a Hill season 2 over on Showtime. That was confirmed a little bit earlier this summer, as clearly the premium-cable network didn’t want anyone getting into the finale uncertain as to what the future for the series could hold.
In a statement confirming the news earlier this year, this is what Gary Levine, the co-president of entertainment for Showtime, had to say on the subject:
“’City on a Hill’ is that addictive kind of meaty and messy show we love at Showtime … With the inspired pairing of Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge and the inspired writing of Tom Fontana and Chuck MacLean, we believe there is a rich future for this compelling series.”
We’ve said for some time that live viewing is becoming more and more insignificant to the long-term future of television shows, and we think that the ratings for City on a Hill at the moment are pretty indicative of that. Let’s put things in these terms. In terms of live ratings, the drama is averaging just over 480,000 viewers an episode. Yet, those ratings balloon outward to over 3.5 million a week when you factor in repeats, streams, DVR views, and other data. Not even 20% of the show’s viewers are actually watching it live.
When could City on a Hill season 2 premiere?
Most likely, the summer or fall of 2020. Showtime doesn’t like to have huge hiatuses in the middle of their seasons, especially for shows that just came on the air. Consider Homeland having such a long hiatus the exception more so than the norm. Expect to be waiting for a while, though, for official details on City on a Hill season 2 — think in terms of next spring.
