The Crown season 5: Could Helen Mirren step in as Queen Elizabeth?

Crown season 3

We know that The Crown season 3 has yet to premiere on Netflix, and with that, it almost seems silly to look far into the future. Yet, we know the plan is for Netflix to do six seasons of the drama, and with there being a different cast members every two years as the action leaps forward.

This is where the Helen Mirren conversations begin. You see, Mirren famously played the Queen in the extraordinary film The Queen, which also just so happened to be written by The Crown showrunner Peter Morgan. He all but certainly understands that anyone portraying Elizabeth will be compared to Mirren and given the era of the final two seasons, Helen would make a certain degree of sense.

As it turns out, she’s also very well aware of the show. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Morgan confirmed that he hasn’t spoken with Helen about playing Elizabeth in either season 5 or 6 of the series, but did note that she’s been keeping up with it so far:

“She loves the show … She thought there was nothing left to say, and I think she’s really surprised.”

Getting Mirren for the final seasons would be an extraordinary coup for Netflix, and for making sure that the end of The Crown was brought to another level. Sure, it would raise questions of whether or not the show and The Queen were suddenly linked in some bizarre onscreen way, but our thinking is that if you have an opportunity to cast Helen Mirren in a project, it would be insane to not at least have the idea roll around in your head a little bit. She already understands Elizabeth beyond most other actors — plus, she’s extraordinary and she may welcome the challenge of trying to differentiate this version of the Monarch from what she’s done previously.

The Crown season 3 will premiere on Netflix a little bit later this year. If you do want to get some other news all about it, be sure to visit the link here now.
