As we approach the Animal Kingdom season 4 finale on TNT this coming Tuesday, it’s clearer than ever before that the endgame of this season will be very much about a power struggle. It’s hard to view things in any other way.
Let’s start by mapping out where things are at the moment — Smurf is dead. She’s not coming back and that was not some sort of strange fake-out on what happened. We can be upset about it (and we are), but that’s just the way things are with that character’s demise. You can head over here to read more of what Ellen Barkin had to say on that subject.

From here, the question becomes who tries to take over her empire — and the heir apparent may be the youngest member of the group in J. For starters, he is the one who killed Smurf — he did what he felt needed to be done in the moment regardless of whatever the consequences were. He’s also the one who has been most actively engaged in planning out the future — he’s made business deals and he’s worked towards getting one over on Smurf even when she was alive.
Here’s the other twist you have to think about: How is Pope going to feel about the possible rise of J? While shooting Smurf may have needed to be done, that doesn’t mean that Pope has to be happy about it. As a matter of fact, we can all but guarantee that he is going to be upset that Smurf is dead … and then also that J has been so sneaky when it comes to Angela. There is a chance for a lot of chaos coming up in the finale, and that is without even thinking about the idea that something could happen to Angela, who J has clearly been unhappy about in terms of her presence.
