Is Krypton renewed for a season 3, canceled over at Syfy?
Let’s start, for the time being, by looking at the signals that Syfy is putting out there. The network is developing a Lobo spin-off series and for that reason and that reason only, we’re relatively optimistic that there could be a little bit more in the way of Krypton coming up. Also, consider the Superman brand! While this may not be the story of Clark Kent, we do think that the DC Comics ties here are enough to help the series out to a certain extent … or they could help it land a new home in the event that the series ends up getting canceled.
The reason for concern comes via the live+same-day ratings for Krypton season 2, which were far below what we would’ve expected in advance. This season averaged just a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just over 400,000 live viewers a week, which are both enormous drops (think more than 45%) from the averages for the first season. What does that mean for the future of the series? Bad things, since you have to imagine that Syfy would be worried about a similar drop. If the ratings for season 2 were steady the whole way through, maybe there would be more confidence; yet, Krypton aired its lowest-rated episode of the season last week and its average has slipped throughout the year.
Here’s the silver lining — maybe the DVR and streaming numbers are such the Krypton has a little bit of hope hiding away underneath the surface. That is certainly not something that we want to rule out, given that these shows all do have a tendency to draw a lot of numbers after the fact. There is a lot to love about Krypton, especially its battle sequences and adaptations of characters like Doomsday. It’s done a lot creatively to justify more episodes, but whether or not that happens remains to be seen.
