Animal Kingdom season 5 spoilers: How will the Codys move forward?

For starters, there is no Smurf anymore. There is no strong, unifying force behind the scenes for the Cody family. While it’s pretty clear at this point that Deran, Pope, and J were no big-time Smurf fans, they still did whatever they could to work with her. She was so good at being able to create jobs for them, so whatever they may have thought of her, she kept that business going.

Without Smurf, it’s going to be chaos. For Pope, he’s lived much of his life around Smurf and even lives with her. What’s going to happen with him now? Meanwhile, J and Smurf went toe-to-toe a lot, but it felt like there was a mutual understanding there. Everyone had their own feeling about Smurf’s power and moving forward, there could be jockeying to restabilize the hierarchy. In speaking about that a little bit further, just take a look at what executive producer John Wells had to say via TVLine:
It’ll be the boys trying to figure out how to go on without their mother. Part of what we’ve been trying to do is a family drama set in a very complicated and unpleasant world with some people that seem to be having a good time. You kinda wish you could hang out with them at the same time as you’re terrified of them. And I think this will provide us with more opportunity to do that going forward, because now, we’ve kinda upset that whole balance. Who is going to be in charge? Who is going to make the decisions? Can anybody trust anybody else? We always talk about existential dread with the show. We want to live in that sense of existential dread all the time.
While it does feel like there’s a chance the family itself could fall apart at the end of the finale next week, we don’t envision that happening. After just losing Smurf, we have a feeling that this gang is going to get back together.
