This story was painful for all parties involved, and it also reminded us that no matter how much trouble Drake Carne gets himself into, he somehow still manages to be extraordinarily naive. Why did he think stealing a child would work? Demelza convinced him to bring John Conan back to his grandmother, and after that, Morwenna couldn’t bear to speak to him. She understood the intention behind why he did what he did, but that didn’t make the situation any easier for her.
Let’s get now to George Warleggan. Remember when so many people had sympathy for him? Well, that goes out the window courtesy of him speaking out about the benefits of slavery … including how slaves are somehow happy with their condition and being fed. He was encouraged to do this by Ralph and others, but the reaction to it was far from spectacular. Ross made a compelling counterargument, which made George wonder if there was a way to get back at him. His reputation was falling into shambles and he was desperate.
Yet, George still had a chance in order to ensure that he could create a conspiracy against Ross as anti-government. That’s what happens when you spend a lot of time with Ned Despard, one of the worst friends imaginable and a guy who loves to talk about detonating the kind. (Yes, Ned is a bad friend — throwing that out there.) Ross, however, is too much of a good friend for his own good. His decision to support Ned put a wedge between him and Dwight Enys, who questioned the logic of making this sort of support public. Ross was putting too much stock in the support given to him in the past.
Oh, and we should mention that Ned was tracked down and brought away near the end of the episode, with the accusations of him being a traitor still out there. Ross was able to avoid any detection, but Ned being in custody is an issue Ross has to deal with now.
While all of this chaos going on out there, we should also mention Geoffrey Charles and Cecily trying to run off together! That’s going to be a story that lasts for a while…
CarterMatt Verdict
Overall, we would consider Poldark season 5 episode 5 another opportunity to watch some compelling television. What wasn’t to like about what we had here? This was a very entertaining episode with a lot of great content from start to finish, but it also elevated the stakes and made us wonder more of if Ross could see the forest through the trees. The storyline with Drake and Morwenna wasn’t as emphasized later on in the episode, but Morwenna being able to accept saying farewell to her son is an important step towards the two characters having a legitimate future together.
