We also have a chance to see Dwight again! That’s a welcome sign that he’ll be sticking around for the second half of the season. It’s a bit of a hodgepodge group of characters, but they are all coming together with a unified goal. What makes The Walking Dead stand out now from Fear the Walking Dead is a simple matter of focus. With the original show, it’s so much more about managing communities. With this spin-off, it’s more about managing individuals. Morgan, Alicia, and the rest of the group are off trying to make the apocalypse better one person at a time … while also still struggling to take care of themselves.
It’s the moment at the end of the preview that is perhaps the most poignant, as Althea asks Morgan behind the camera if he intends to try to find a way to start living for himself? That’s one of the key themes of the second half of this season; it’s great to take care of others, but these characters do need to find their own happiness somewhere along the way. Maybe John and June getting engaged in the midseason finale can serve as a jumping-off point for a number of other people doing the same thing.
