After Agents of SHIELD, ABC plotting another Marvel show
We have a feeling that moving forward, Marvel projects is going to be something that ABC is going to prioritize … and understandably so. Let’s just think about things this way: Marvel and ABC are owned by the same parent company and while Disney+ is getting a lot of high-profile projects, we think that the broadcast network still wants to have their own piece of the pie.
Speaking (via Deadline) while at ABC’s TCA Summer Press Tour event today, the network’s own Karey Burke did confirm that there is something in early development: “I have spoken to Marvel and we are in active talks about one project in particular.”
So what will this project be? Burke noted that it is a “new” project, which could mean either something based on a new property or a new project that is separate from what they’ve developed in the past. It was previously announced that ABC was looking at a show about lesser-known female heroes, and this new concept could also have a female lead.
Because it’s still so early on in the process, it would be foolish to sit here and feel altogether confident that it ends up being ordered to series … but we do think the interest is going to be there among viewers to see something more, at least provided that the concept is right. One of the reasons why Agents of SHIELD ended up drawing the audience that it did was because of its intelligence, innovation, and commitment to telling stories that you don’t get elsewhere. If we continue to see stuff like that from Marvel at ABC, they could continue to have some success stories on the air for a while.
Rest assured that once we have more news to report on when it comes to ABC and Marvel’s next show, we’ll have it for you here. We imagine that come the TCA Winter Press Tour early next year, there will be a chance for a few more updates.
