Outlander season 5 casting news: Leonard Cook to appear

Outlander season 4

In the wake of the big Outlander casting reveal from earlier today, some other news is coming through that previously slipped through the cracks earlier this summer.

Through his management company on Twitter (the same one that announced the casting of Mark Barrett, as revealed earlier), Leonard Cook is also joining the cast of Outlander season 5 in a featured role. Note that a “featured role” can mean many different things, whether it be a guest spot in a single episode or an arc that lasts several. Also, appearing in just one episode doesn’t always mean your role is unimportant. Over the past two seasons, we can count plenty of characters who made a huge impression in limited screen time.

With Mark Barrett, it felt easy to speculate that he would be a MacKenzie thanks to his strong physical similarity to Richard Rankin. With Leonard Cook, we don’t think identifying a possible role for him is as clear. There are plenty of candidates from within the Diana Gabaldon book The Fiery Cross, and then there’s always a chance that he takes on a totally new role, as well — someone who combines the story of several book characters. Starz tends to make their casting announcements in bulk form, and we imagine when they decide to release more info, they’ll spell out some of these roles, as well.

Cook is best known to date as a theater actor, and he is joining the company of many other wonderful theater actors on Outlander. One of them in Laura Donnelly (Jenny) has received international acclaim recently for her role in The Ferryman. (We hope that we get a chance to see her back on Outlander again at some point in the future.)

Season 5 for the series is set to premiere on Starz come early 2020 — there’s a pretty broad window within that, so we’re hoping that throughout the rest of this long hiatus, we do get a few more details on some of what lies ahead.

What do you want to see from Leonard Cook on Outlander season 5?

Be sure to share in the comments! Of course, be sure to stick around, as well, for some other news on the series.
