Homeland season 8 delayed again, premiere date revealed

Homeland season 7

Remember when Homeland season 8 was meant to premiere this summer, and then this fall? Well, neither one of those things are happening now. The Claire Danes-led drama series is still going to finish its run on Showtime, but it’s not going to be doing so until 2020. The network confirmed the news this morning at the TCA Summer Press Tour.

So why the delay? Some of it seems to be courtesy of the production demands that are coming from filming overseas. Meanwhile, some of it may have to do with a logjam of shows this fall. We’ve already reported today that Showtime is already programming three hours of television this fall in between Shameless, Ray Donovan, and Kidding. There’s no room for anything else unless the network wanted to put a show on another night, which is something that they don’t seem to be altogether inclined to do.

Here’s the good news — we do have a Homeland season 8 premiere date now! The drama will kick off its beginning of the end on Sunday, February 9 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern, and we expect that this date is going to stick. This is the first time that Showtime has presented an actual date beyond just a time of the year. They also revealed a handful of details about what’s coming, including just how Carrie and Saul are going to be dealing with issues in the Middle East once more. CarterMatt has the synopsis for you below:

The final season of Homeland finds Carrie Mathison (Danes) recovering from months of brutal confinement in a Russian gulag. Her body is healing, but her memory remains fractured — which is a problem for Saul (Mandy Patinkin), now National Security Advisor to the newly ascendant President Warner (Emmy and Golden Globe winner Beau Bridges). The top priority of Warner’s young administration is an end to the “forever war” in Afghanistan, and Saul has been dispatched to engage the Taliban in peace negotiations. But Kabul teems with warlords and mercenaries, zealots and spies — and Saul needs the relationships and expertise that only his protégé can provide. Against medical advice, Saul asks Carrie to walk with him into the lion’s den — one last time.

In a lot of ways, this information suggests that we’re going to be in the midst of something nostalgic — Homeland was about these overseas missions in its early days. Yet, let’s not forget the inner message here that these wars and missions are never-ending. Despite much of what Carrie and Saul have done since the start of the series, they are back where they started.
