Are You the One? season 8 moving to Monday nights at 11:00 p.m.
Instead, MTV announced tonight that the reality show is moving to Monday nights at 11:00 p.m. Eastern time, following a new episode of The Hills: New Beginnings. In all honesty, we don’t get the move. Why take the show out of primetime and put it at a spot where a lot of people can’t watch it live? There are people with jobs and other things going on so it’s going to be hard for them to keep up when it’s on.
We wondered if the move had something to do with the show’s ratings, so we went and checked — Are You the One? is averaging about the same live viewing numbers as The Hills: New Beginnings, and it is also generating similar numbers to some past episodes in seasons prior. We’re not looking at a show that was tanking out here by any means. This may just be MTV saying that they don’t really care that much about live viewers and that the show makes a lot of money via DVR and other measures. Maybe they don’t like the show airing against Big Brother over on CBS given that the shows have similar reality TV audiences. Maybe they think it and The Hills paired together will create some sort of beautiful music together.
Regardless of the reasoning, Are You the One? is shifting over to a new place and the one silver lining is this: You’re not going to have to wait as long to see what’s coming up next, and also learn whether or not some more of these people can find their perfect match. The content of the show isn’t going to change with the move, and we just wonder if this is something MTV is going to experiment with via some other shows in the future. If they discover that there are viewers up late, maybe they can take advantage of a timeslot that is relatively open season save for some late-night shows.
