Jane the Virgin season 6: Is a revival possible at The CW?
Following tonight’s finale on The CW, is a Jane the Virgin season 6 revival still possible at some point down the road? Should we just push that out of our brain forever?
First and foremost, we should note that tonight is the series finale — this isn’t yet another episode of the show where there’s a cliffhanger and we have to wait until next season to find out what happened. Unless the show’s producers decide to completely through a wrench into the traditional series-finale structure, we have a feeling that there will be an element of closure tonight. Jane the Virgin has been a welcome oasis in a desert of very predictable, at times over-dramatic television. It’s funny, lighthearted, but also celebratory of its telenovela roots. It has no problem getting a little messy or crazy to suit the story.
Yet, all good things must come to an end and it’s been planned for a while that season 5 will be the end. Because of that, there are no immediate hopes for a season 6 or beyond.
Does that mean that it’s completely impossible that a revival could come up down the road? Hardly. Given the nature of this show and the love for these characters that is out there, we could easily foresee a movie or some limited series four or five years down the line. With streaming television so big these days there is always going to be a chance that Jane the Virgin continues to find an audience in the years that follow the series finale. Gina Rodriguez and the rest of the cast may be moving on to other things, but we don’t think that they will forget about this show. Neither will The CW, given that it scored them some of their first significant Golden Globes love ever following the merger between UPN and The WB almost a decade and a half ago. (Supernatural is the only remaining scripted show on the network that existed before that era.)
Is there a chance for a spin-off?
We know that it was already attempted at The CW with Jane the Novela, an anthology series where each season would be based on one of Jane’s books. It was meant to be narrated by Rodriguez, but the network opted to not give it a series order. We know that there is still an openness to other ideas at The CW, so this is something to keep your eyes peeled for over the next few months, if not years.
