Poldark, Grantchester stars join Outlander’s Laura Donnelly in The Nevers
We’ve already reported that this Victorian-set supernatural drama from Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Joss Whedon was going to feature Outlander actress Laura Donnelly in a lead role as Amalia True, the “most reckless, impulsive, emotionally damaged hero of her time. A menace to stuffy Victorian society, she would die for the cause and kill for a drink.” Now, there are several notable figures coming on board, as well.
Some of these castings were announced today via TVLine, and the following ones especially caught our eye.
James Norton – Fresh off of his time on Grantchester as well as McMafia (which will be back for more in the future), Norton will play Hugo Swann, a “pansexual posh boy whose charm has about five years left on its lease. He runs a secret club and a side trade in blackmail. He’s devoted to fulfilling everyone’s worst impression of him – and fascinated by the Touched.” (Just reading that alone has us understanding exactly why James wanted this role.)
Eleanor Tomlinson – Following her five-season run on Poldark and also the upcoming War of the Worlds, the actress here is playing Mary Brighton. She’s described as “gentle but surprisingly resilient, Mary pursued her dream of singing on stage. A disappointing career and a broken engagement haven’t diminished her spirit. She’s going to be great. She’s going to be very surprised how.” Eleanor has performed as Demelza on the aforementioned BBC series, and even has an album of folk standards and other covers out there.
Pip Torrens – Another Poldark connection! The actor, best known for playing George Warleggan’s uncle Cary, will play here Lord Massen. He is “staunch, unflappable and merciless in his defense of the British Empire, this former General, now Peer, may be the only man who sees clearly what havoc these few strange people can wreak upon the established order — which he will protect, one way or another.”
Nick Frost – The Into the Badlands alum and frequent Simon Pegg collaborator will play Declan Orrun, otherwise known as The Beggar King. “Charismatic and brutal, Declan runs — or has a piece of — most of the low-level criminal activity in the city. He’s perfectly happy to help Amalia and her cause, and equally happy to sell them out. He backs winners, and the Touched are long odds.”
Denis O’Hare – Finally, the former True Blood star (who has appeared sporadically on American Horror Story) will play here Dr. Edmund Hague, a “gifted American surgeon. He uses his skills in the coldest, most brutal way possible — but it’s all in the name of progress!”
What we’re trying to tell you here is simple: The Nevers has an incredible cast and we’re excited to see it air already. (We’ll be lucky, though, if it comes out before the end of 2020 — if it even comes out then.)
Are you officially excited for The Nevers?
