Is Years and Years renewed by HBO, canceled after one season?
With that being said, Years and Years is not ending because it was canceled by its British home in BBC One. Instead, this was never designed to be anything more than a six-episode journey through a specific story, one that left off with a huge cliffhanger when it comes to whether or not the real Viv Rook went to prison at all. A lot of the ending was devised to be perplexing as the show takes you into its bizarre, dystopian look at the future.
Unfortunately, Russell T. Davies seems to be moving forward now, at least based on what he had to say via Deadline in a new interview about the end of the series:
I’m afraid that’s it. I mean, that’s such a perfect ending. It was always devised as a one-off for the BBC. It was originally pitched to them as just six episodes, and I always knew that we’d end on that question – “is that you?” I mean, doesn’t that sum up the whole of life? Is that you?
Those are the last words spoken and imagine if you answered that it would be so disappointing. As much as I would love to have a series about Edith, a digital ghost, swimming around the world killing all the pirates. Maybe I should have gone to Comic-Con and I should be pitching that.
We definitely understand why there would be those out there who wanted a LOT more, just as we also understand why this ending feels like such a fitting one. It is a conclusion that does make you want to wonder so many more things about the future, but that’s kind of the point! We’ve seen sometimes with shows how trying to answer every mystery can lead to a polarizing reaction; then again, a lot of people were furious at Lost for not answering every question and leaving that off in a way where there were still mysteries over what everything meant.
The moral of the story here is largely this — within the world of television, there is virtually no way to make everyone happy. The more we realize that, the better.
