America’s Got Talent video: Melissa Arleth’s rat returns!
In the sneak peek below from this upcoming episode (via Parade), you can see Melissa help to guide her rodent friend through a number of different obstacles. There haven’t been many trained rat acts on the show over the years, so there is naturally something quite fun about seeing this one. It’s a cool rat, and it’s actually quite adorable! We, of course, say this as someone who hasn’t had to deal with many rat problems in real life, so our perception of them may be somewhat skewed. We just don’t have any negative experiences or fears of rodents.

So while the act is impressive, there is still another question worth wondering: Is it fitting for the live shows? From a variety perspective, sure — it’s not something that you’re going to get anywhere else and we’ll always celebrate that level of uniqueness. Given that the rat will have performed a couple of times already in front of a live audience, there is no reason to think that they would freeze up on live TV.
However, you can make a clear case after watching this that there’s no chance that a trained rat act is going to win America’s Got Talent. It has nothing to do with the talent; instead, it’s just got more to do with some of the preconceived notions that people have about rodents and also the preferences that they’ve got for singers and magic acts. The only time an animal act won America’s Got Talent was when Olate Dogs did it — and people love dogs significantly more in the mainstream than they do rodents.
