Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Boris Johnson, Puerto Rico

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver - Boris Johnson

After a long delay, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver came back on the air Sunday with a LOT to discuss.

Things started off tonight with a discussion of Puerto Rico, which made a certain degree of sense given the recent resignation of the Governor and some protests that have been going on in the streets there. Oliver was covering Puerto Rico long before Hurricane Maria first struck, including the corruption and debt crisis that have been going on here.

We don’t think that there are going to be many who disagree with Oliver’s notion that the protests were justified — in a lot of ways, we’re surprised that this hasn’t gotten MORE attention. We’re talking hundreds of thousands of people desperate to have their voices heard on this subject. (Here’s how funny this whole ordeal was — Oliver presented a clip from Fox News, and it was the Governor who was the butt of the joke rather than the network.)

The main segment: Boris Johnson

We knew that this was coming from the moment he was named Prime Minister. Oliver has mocked the British politician on a number of occasions and now, the mockery has gone to new heights. That includes Johnson’s love of creating buses.

Oliver was intent in this Last Week Tonight episode to give you a full portrait of Boris Johnson, a man who has been compared often to Donald Trump. Is that fair? In Oliver’s mind, not so much. Johnson is far more complicated. For starters, there are reports out there that Boris intentionally messes up his hair because he wants to. He has been able to present himself as more of a normal person rather than your typical politician — and he’s also been able to change the narrative. Go back to his bus story — was he just trying to change the Google searches for “Boris Johnson bus” so push away some falsehoods from the past related to Brexit.

While Johnson may be great at spinning narratives in Britain, Oliver pointed out that there were some huge issues with his policies — especially when it comes to international relations. There is a good chance that Brexit could continue to be painful for Great Britain, and we’ll have to see just what the results of that are.
