Absentia season 3 status not addressed at Amazon TCA event

Absentia

Is an Absentia season 3 renewal coming in the near future? All signs seem to be leading to that fact, but the streaming service, at least for now, hasn’t come forward with an official renewal.

Even today, Amazon had themselves a golden opportunity to go ahead and greenlight a third season of the show while at the TCA Summer Press Tour, but they opted to not make that announcement. Why wait? It could be due to discussions or just planning a proper time for an announcement later. Either way, the wait for an announcement is surprising given that a renewal feels like it’s going to happen. The writers’ room is already open and production is slated to begin a little bit later this year!

While in some ways a season 3 renewal feels like a formality, it’s welcome news to have as that official announcement gives even more credibility to the show and also gives you a further sense of Amazon having its back. It reassures everyone in America that new episodes will premiere in 2020. It’s possible that Amazon just chooses to announce the renewal once the new episodes begin filming so that they can highlight Stana Katic and some other members of the cast out on set.

When Absentia season 3 does premiere, odds are that it is going to usher in a new era for the series. Think about the end of season 2, after all, and some of what we had a chance to see — some dramatic reveals leading to the big news that Alice Durand entered into a relationship with Nick with some ulterior motives in mind. We have a hard time imagining that Alice survived the end of season 2 and now, Nick, Flynn, and Emily’s lives are in some ways changed. We imagine that season 3 is going to kick off with everyone in a new place, but with Emily still doing whatever she needs to at the request of the FBI. This show will likely still be at the intersection of a psychological thriller and a crime drama. It’s hard to see that changing.
