Lucifer season 5 episode count upped to sixteen; what this means

Lucifer

While Lucifer season 5 may be the final season, there is still good news to share today about the episode count!

In a post on Twitter, Netflix confirmed that there will be sixteen episodes total in the final season, an increase from the ten that was originally ordered by the series. This is news is nothing short of wonderful, largely in that it gives Joe Henderson, Ildy Modrovich (who reacted to the news below), and the entire writing team a chance to put together the perfect ending to the show. Also, it will make fans feel that much more fulfilled.

The idea of a longer Lucifer season 5 is one that we’ve been behind for some time. Last month, we made the case for a 16-episode final season split into two halves of eight. While it wouldn’t be the same as getting a Lucifer season 6, it would make it feel almost as though there were two separate seasons of the show still coming. Given how Netflix episodes tend to be about five or six minutes longer than the ones on Fox (using season 4 as a model, anyway), it will probably feel like something closer to 17-18 episodes of a network TV show in terms of content.

As for whether or not these sixteen episodes will be split into batches of eight, that remains to be seen … but we would be all for it. What this would mean is that the first batch could come out at some point next spring, while the final eight could premiere in late summer/early fall 2020. If they were to hold the whole season to release at once, we’d probably have a longer hiatus in between seasons. Plus, dividing the season up may help to make the run feel a little bit longer and build more anticipation for the end of the road.

From our vantage point, sixteen episodes is more than enough time to resolve the Lucifer/Hell storyline, plus to get him back to Chloe and (hopefully) give us a chance to witness the two of them as a couple for at least a little while. This may be a show with its darker edges, but we want to think happiness is possible in the end.

What do you think about Lucifer season 5 having a larger total episode count?
