True Detective season 4 possible, but nothing yet confirmed
Speaking at the network’s Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour panel, programming head Casey Bloys made it clear that there are no plans for a new season as of yet. As of right now, the ball is in the court of show executive producer Nic Pizzolatto to come up with an idea that is exciting and worth telling. Bloys noted that Pizzolatto has mulled ideas already and we’ve heard the same thing from the showrunner himself.
Do we think that there will be a season 4 announcement by this time next year? Probably, since that feels like the perfect cycle for a show like this. If season 4 is announced next year, there’s a chance that it could come out at some point in either 2021 or early 2022. True Detective remains one of HBO’s most successful franchises. It is looking to keep momentum going from a well-received season 3 — while not loved by all critics, it was universally more successful than the oft-polarizing second season of the show. It featured a great performance from Mahershala Ali and the same twisted, introspective storytelling we got the first go-around.
We think the reason why HBO is taking so time now between these seasons is because they’ve learned their lesson. They don’t want to put another repeat of season 2 on the air, where they find themselves in a position where they rushed a story out there before it was ready. They have to make this as close to perfect as possible, and they need to pick the right lead.
In other network franchise news, Bloys confirmed that there are no plans for a Big Little Lies season 3, noting that there may not be any more of the story to tell after the events of the season 2 finale. He also defended the final season of Game of Thrones, saying that the network never took seriously that (ridiculous) petition from people asking for reshoots of the end of the series. That same petition was met with harsh reaction by series defenders, and also some cast and crew members.
