Outlander season 5 update: Sam Heughan on filming; our view of progress

Outlander season 4

For today’s CarterMatt Outlander season 5 filming update, we’re taking a look at both where things are now — but also where things could be going from here.

In a new post on Twitter this week, none other than Jamie Fraser himself in Sam Heughan confirmed that there are still night shoots happening behind the scenes, a trend that is carrying over from last week. If you’re wondering what is going on with the relative lack of great social-media scoop from the set at the moment, it has a thing or two to do with it being hard to provide a lot of interesting photos late at night! Also, everyone’s probably just tired and interested in going straight to bed the moment they have a chance.

Also, considering where production is at the moment in the story — given that things started around mid-April with season 5, we’re several months in now and they are getting deeper into their adaptation of The Fiery Cross. We hesitate to use words like “the halfway point,” just because there are so many relative ways to look at that. (Maybe they’re an episode before the technical halfway point, or an episode after.) Given that it’s taken nine or so months before to film a season of Outlander, it’s fair to assume that more than three months in, the show’s put a solid chunk of episodes in the can.

There is reason to believe that production is slightly more efficient this go-around than they’ve been in the past. For starters, the show can be a little more centralized now that Fraser’s Ridge is set and several locations (whether it be River Run or some of the nearby communities) have already been set. Sure, there is the Big House and some other new elements of the story this season, but there’s a little less traversing that needs to be done given that all major characters are now roughly in the same place.

We foresee Outlander season 5 filming going until we get around to the fall; one of the things we’ve witnessed over the years is everyone (including us) sometimes thinking that things are further along than they are in the moment, and that’s likely due to our own desire to see these episodes on the air! That won’t happen until 2020.

What are you the most excited to see in regards to Outlander season 5?
